"BUDDING WRITERS NEED SUPPORT" MAWU COMPLAINS

Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) budding desk, on Wednesday complained that uprising potential writers are not getting enough support to grow and succeed with writing as other artistic principles do.
The desk’s chairperson Juliette Neba said this during the publishing of books titled The Mandebvu Mistress and Other Stories which features works by budding writers in the country.
“We have written proposals and tried best to seek for funding for our projects but many are not willing to help us even where they see potential. Some have even told us outright they only support the discipline of music and yet all art disciplines are the same and equal,” Neba said.
She said that they are alot of good stories that the budding writers are able and have to write, but they lack the resources to be able to publicise their works
“As a budding desk, we want to give these up and coming writers a platform but with inadequate resources it has been a challenge. With our own little resources we have now managed to publish a book and this is all about promoting reading and writing culture in the country,” Neba said.
The budding desk chairperson called upon writers to keep writing even in the absence of support saying this is the only way for them to contribute to the growth of writing in the country.
Neba said the uniqueness of the book is that it comprises stories from emerging voices in writing.
Apart from Neba, some of the writers who have contributed stories to the book published by Blantyre-based Zikani Publishing House include Foster Benjamin, Patience Chilinjala, Jimmy Mpindamalata, Griffin Theu, Ronald Maliro and Rodgers Gondwe
